Ever feel like divine intervention has helped you avoid a dangerous situation that could have resulted in serious injury or death?
Stories abound of angels stepping in when help is needed most. There’s the Guideposts story of the Georgia family who went to visit relatives for the day. Renee stopped before leaving and said a quick prayer of protection before they left. Later, she and her husband Steve were riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) when they lost control and it was about to land on top of them. Miraculously, Steve was able to hold up the 700-pound vehicle as he and Renee rolled out from underneath it before it crushed them. Renee is convinced angels were at work that day.
Joyce Woodward of England was about to head out for the day when a last-minute phone call stopped her. After finishing the call, she went outside to find her car had been demolished by a large tree. She thanks her lucky stars, “I think I have a guardian angel.”
There’s even a series of stories showing images of possible angels caught on film. Another video shows a little boy in Ukraine running into traffic and escaping unscathed, as if an angel scooped him up and placed him out of harm’s way.
A New Town and a New Adventure
I’ve had a couple of near misses in life, but there was no doubt my guardian angel stepped in to help on December 31, 2022.
New Year’s Eve had been a quiet experience for the past couple of years, so I decided to usher in 2023 by heading to a coastal town I have not seen to watch a band I’ve enjoyed listening to in the past.
Rock and Roll New Years
On December 31, 2022, an outdoor concert began at 11 p.m. in downtown Mobile. The music was loud and upbeat, and the crowd was enjoying the show. Around 11:15 p.m. I heard what sounded like fireworks behind me. At first, I thought it was pyrotechnics being used on stage, but then I heard it again. I asked my partner Dave, “Does that sound like fireworks to you?” He nodded yes as the band continued to play crowd favorites, and I pushed my concern aside.
Mayhem Across the Park
Just 75 yards away, a completely different scene was unfolding – a gunman shot someone hanging out in front of a bar then sprayed bullets into the crowd. People were screaming and running. Police officers on horseback responded and the area was cordoned off so ambulances could collect the injured.
Jatarious Reives, age 24, was shot and killed and seven others were wounded.
Jatarious told his family he loved them before he left that night. A family member said he was looking forward to the birth of his son.
MoonPie Over Mobile
Despite the chaos nearby, the band continued to play without disruption, and the crowd sang along. As the 12,000 concert attendees counted down the seconds until midnight, we watched the electronic Moon Pie drop and cheered. After the concert, we walked across the park only to discover the area had been blocked off with crime scene tape. That’s when we heard about the mass shooting.
Wide Awake Realization
After returning to the hotel, I woke up with a start at 3 a.m. when I realized how the whole situation could have played out differently. What if we had decided to check out the action on Dauphin Street as discussed rather than linger in the hotel room? I said a brief prayer of thanks to our guardian angels for watching over us.
