Ghosts Among the Gravestones

Posted on July 10, 2026July 10, 2026

A graveyard can be a peaceful place. Conversely, cemeteries can be full of restless spirits and poltergeists, depending on the deceased residing there.

A Ghostly Final Resting Place in Resaca

The Resaca Confederate Cemetery in Resaca, Georgia, is a lovely final resting place for the soldiers buried there.

In May 1864, more than 400 Confederate soldiers lost their lives in the Battle of Resaca and were left scattered in shallow graves across the farm of the Col. John Green family. After the battle was over, the family returned to the farm. Col. Green’s daughters were upset when they arrived and saw all the attempted burials, so they collected them in order to give each man a proper burial. Col. Green, who was a superintendent with the Georgia railroad, gave his daughters 2.5 acres of land to build a cemetery on behalf of the fallen soldiers. The ladies raised money and founded the cemetery in 1866, a little over a year after the Civil War ended.

While there are a number of unmarked graves, the inhabitants there don’t seem to mind remaining unnamed, in my opinion. For me, it is one of the most peaceful graveyards I have ever visited.

The Children Ask for Help

One day when I was walking with a friend through a cemetery in North Georgia, I heard a small voice calling me. I told my friend, “Hang on a minute,” and walked over to the gravestone of a little girl who had died some time ago. I addressed her by her name and told her she was loved, and it was time to rest. I believe by acknowledging her by name, she would be able to find peace in that beautiful place.

Sometimes, even in the afterlife, the deceased need to be comforted with the knowledge that someone cares.

Oakland Cemetery is Full of Surprises

Founded in 1850, the 48-acre Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta features the graves of 70,000 people – from the famous to the unknown – as well as Confederate and Union soldiers. Oakland Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Oakland Foundation serves to preserve and restore this Atlanta treasure. Events are held annually here including Capturing the Spirit of Oakland, which features actors portraying famous residents of the cemetery.

If you haven’t seen Oakland Cemetery, it’s well worth a visit. If you are a medium, and you don’t want to have your visit interrupted by ghosts, you may want to consider a daytime visit.

Taking a Ghost “To Go”

One time, a friend took me for a visit to Oakland Cemetery at night. Lights began flashing on and off. I heard voices, and I heard the repeated recitation of a prayer. The prayer prompted me to start looking for the source. That’s when I discovered the prayer etched into a tall concrete headstone. I acknowledged the beautiful prayer and substantial upright headstone, which seemed to calm the disruptive energy around the man’s grave.

Fan BladeSometimes, the deceased like to cling to clairvoyants after we leave a cemetery. In one instance, my friend would not let me go inside her house after our visit, so I visited my parents’ house instead. The next thing I knew, my dad called out to my mom asking where I had been. She said I had visited Oakland Cemetery. Cusswords ensued! Apparently, the ghost I had inadvertently brought to my parent’s house caused chaos in my dad’s office. A ceiling fan blade became disconnected and flew horizontally across the office towards my dad’s head. He ducked and it missed – thankfully.

My dad had been in a foul mood that day, and the spirits were not having it! I was more careful about bringing spirits home after that incident.

Haunted Cemeteries in Georgia – Road Trip Anyone?

There are multiple haunted cemeteries in Georgia to visit, if you are considering a road trip. Interestingly, the Roswell Cemetery is not on the list, and it should be. The old cemetery houses founders of the city of Roswell, as well as Confederate and Union soldiers.  Mists and orbs have been sighted there. I’ve seen paranormal activity in that cemetery as I was walking by.

On the Only In Your State website, the page Only in Georgia, mentions haunted cemeteries in Atlanta, Savannah, Andersonville, Barnesville, and Marietta.

“If you visit the cemetery across from the high school (in Marietta), you may be in for a shock. Sightings have occurred within the cemetery grounds, including that of a small child, without shoes, who roams the grounds crying.” – Only in Your State

The Most Haunted Graveyard of All?

One of the most haunted graveyards is reportedly Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in Midlothian, Illinois.  Moving lights, a moving tombstone, disappearing farmhouses and more. Check it out! Haunted Cemetery: Ghost House, White Lady & Broken Tombs at Bachelor’s Grove.
